Dining Room Sideboard

I mentioned a little while ago that we had finally found a sideboard for our dining room. Our dining room table is really narrow so having extra space to put dishes and food is a huge plus. Not to mention the extra storage we have in the dining room, since Collier's room used to be mostly kitchen/dining room storage. We purchased this off of Craigslist and the previous owner had already painted it white. The white is perfect...it feels fresh and modern and doesn't compete with our gorgeous farmhouse table. I still want to play around with the styling of the table...these were all random items around our house.

Gutter Bookshelf Update

Almost 2 years ago, we put in a gutter bookshelf for Rilo's room.  We've loved it thus far...especially since it was free (we had a gutter sitting in our basement)!  Lately though, Rilo's shelf has been overflowing with books.  Adam cut another piece of the gutter and we installed a second shelf.  We also grabbed the $14.99 toy box from Ikea.  It's nice to have one place to throw her toys...it makes her room feel much more organized!

Bedroom Rug Options

If you follow me on Pinterest, you may have seen a mad rug pinning spree by me last week. I found some great 8 x 10 options that were affordable and would possibly work in our rearranged bedroom space. Adam and I carefully narrowed down our options until we found the right one (I even found a killer deal on it!). And wouldn't you know it...it's backordered until April! I've even tried multiple sites! So now we're back to the drawing boards. I'm just not sure I can wait that long!

Here's a refresher on the overall colors and main items in the bedroom:

This was the rug we finally settled on:

Side note: The image below was the only one featured on at least 4 different sites.  We actually really liked the idea of just one blue stripe.  So we were a little surprised when we went to Dash and Albert's site and saw it has multiple stripes.  We still liked it but we would have been very shocked if we hadn't stumbled onto their site!

And now here's what we are currently looking at:

{1., 2., 3., 4., 5. , 6. }

Of course now most of these aren't on sale anymore so some of them are out of the running!  I think I may head back to the drawing board.  We need something a little more subtle with a simpler pattern because of the other colors and patterns in the room.  I'll update when we finally make a decision!

Shelf Revamp

I have been more than embarrassed about the state of the shelves in our living room.  I never really styled the shelves to begin with and then I've just continued to add more and more items to the shelf.  It has been looking so horribly undecorated and cluttered.  Every time I would pass it I would think about fixing it up, but never had the motivation.  Well with the new year (and the taking down of Christmas decorations) I finally got around to rearranging and styling the shelf.  It's been a few weeks and I think I still breathe a sigh of relief each time I walk on by.  It's still not exactly where I want it to be, but it is 1000% better.  There is something about this year that makes me want to declutter and simplify.  Perhaps it's the new baby or just a new outlook on my house, but I'm glad I have the organizing bug right now!
Here is a very scary and cluttered before:

And here it is now...again, I am not quite done with it.  I want to replace a few things and move some things around but it feels so much fresher now!

Sneak Peek: Upholstered Headboard

We just arrived in D.C. for a few days, but I wanted to share a quick look at our upholstered headboard.  It still needs to be mounted but we love it so far.  We have rearranged the room and are shopping for a new rug.  We also need to hang up all our art on the walls.  I probably won't share the final makeover for another week or so but I couldn't be more excited that we FINALLY finished, after almost a year of saying I wanted to do this!

Living Room Rug

Oops!  This post didn't go up this morning as scheduled!

Adam and I finally decided it was time to get a new living room rug.  We've had the one that is currently there for about 3 years and it has certainly seen better days.  Especially since Rilo's 1st birthday party incident (where she was fed too many cookies), which has never really fixed itself.  Here is how the living room looked awhile ago.  (I am slowly changing out the pillows and will FINALLY fix up the art wall.)

I saw a few posts weeks ago about RugsUSA having a big sale and I found several rugs on clearance PLUS they are an extra 30% off.  I also found one from Ikea that we like.  All of these options are 5' x 8' and under $200 if you can believe it!

{Quinta Moderno Trellis, RugsUSA}

{Alvine Rand, IKEA}

{Sierra Paddle, RugsUSA}

{Homespun Moroccan Trellis, RugsUSA}

We are going to decide ASAP so we don't miss out on these prices.  I'm also debating on going with a brighter rug, but I don't want it to compete too much with the room.  I would certainly love to hear if you have a favorite!

Front Door

I absolutely adore our front door. It's old and unique and much larger than standard doors these days. We've talked a bit about spicing up the front of the house. Right now, our house is a cream color with olivey-brown beams. The front door and porch swing are black. We really haven't done a whole lot to the front besides adding the house numbers and the swing. We bought planters to put on the little pillars but have yet to plant anything in them. It's about time we make this place pop a little more up on arriving on our door step. We've talked about a few ideas, one being painting the front door. We have some color ideas, but I would love to hear what you think!

Hmm...so I was sure I had a picture with our porch swing, but I can't seem to find it. I'll have to take a new picture and update in the morning. Well it would be on the left, looking at the picture.  Any fun suggestions?

Dining Rooms

I came across this dining room makeover on Aesthetic Outburst and I am so impressed.  I won't ruin it by showing the before picture (but seriously, seriously go see it here) but I love the after.

{image}

I love the patterned rug, the wooden table mixed with different chairs plus the most amazing pendant light.  In fact, it reminds me of another dining room I love, because they have similar elements.  You may have seen this one, by Amber Interiors, going around the web.

It makes me want to change up our dining room a bit.  I seriously looove the chairs that came with our old farmhouse table but they are a bit rickety.  I've thought about changing out all the chairs except for at the ends of the table.  I of course, could NOT part with the original chairs and would probably rotate through them.  I'll have to see if I can find some chairs I love when I get home!

The Kitchen Reveal

I'm excited to share our new space. We are LOVING it so far! It is so functional and usable now!

Just to remind you, here is what our kitchen looked like before, with some added commentary:

And here is the after:

I have to tell you about the countertop we went with. Since we will only be here another year or so, we didn't want to put in something really expensive (we'll turn this into a rental, so we're not worried about resale value). My Dad sent over some laminate samples...I'm not a huge laminate fan, but I saw this new line WilsonArt came out with called "HD laminate". It has texture and depth and looked pretty good on that small square, but I still wasn't sure how it would look on the counters. Can I tell you how much I love it? It looks so nice in person. It looks like it could be some sort of stone, but I don't have to worry about it being a porous surface like granite. Seriously, a great option if you're looking to save some money, but still want it to look nice.

I don't think I can go back to a double sink now that I have this one. I love all the space you have to clean large items. And I smile every time I turn on the faucet...it has so much pressure, I normally don't even use it at it's max setting!

We went with the Ikea barstools. We also mounted our TV that we take when we travel for the summer instead of just leaving it in its box. I actually really like having it in there. I sometimes put on the music stations or the Food Network while I'm cooking.

I have cabinets, I have counterspace and I have drawers! I can put my silverware in a drawer, though I still find myself reaching up to the cabinet to get a spoon. I love that I could clear off my countertop and even bring in some items from our little storage room to put in the cabinets in the island. This kitchen makeover has been almost lifechanging!

Now to break down the cost, in case you're curious. I have to say first, our biggest savings came from the fact that my Dad designed the new layout, ripped out our old cabinets and installed our new ones (in less than 24 hours too). So a BIG BIG thank you to my Dad for being so awesome. More savings happened because Adam did the tilework, painting, and electrical. So again, thanks to my husband for being such a hard worker, despite being so so busy! We also saved by skipping on the custom cabinets and using cabinets from Home Depot. We lucked out because Home Depot was phasing out the style we picked and we ended up getting the cabinets for 20% off!

Cabinets-$1068 Home Depot
Sink-$96 eBay
Faucet- Gift Card + $24 Amazon
Countertop-$250 WilsonArt (my Dad bought the materials and then made it at his shop)
Hardware-$76 Home Depot
Paint-$32 Home Depot
Barstools-$100 Ikea
Backsplash-$49 Home Depot
Supplies- $60

Total Cost: $ 1755.00

[callout]This kitchen makeover has been almost lifechanging![/callout]

Pretty awesome right?! I don't think it looks like it cost under $2000 though...at least I sure hope not. There is nothing more satisfying to me than paying much less than most people while still achieving your desired look! So there you have it, our new kitchen! I hope to share some yummy things I've been whipping up in my new space soon.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me in the comments and I will do my best to answer them! And hopefully comments will start appearing sometime today!
